How to Tell a Griever from a Griever

Apparently I’m not the only author with Grievers on the brain. Unbeknownst to me–at least while I was writing The Grievers–fantasy author James Dashner was creating his own Grievers, a race of slug-like creatures with metal appendages that appear in his 2009 novel The Maze Runner. In order to spare readers any confusion that might result from this coincidence, I’ve prepared a handy chart:

What Makes a Man, Mr. Lebowski? (via X Rated)

Big Lebowski: What makes a man, Mr. Lebowski? The Dude: Uhh…I don’t know, sir. Big Lebowski: Is it being prepared to do the right thing, whatever the cost? Isn’t that what makes a man? The Dude: Hmm…Sure, that and a pair of testicles. *   *   * The Dude, Jeff Bridges' character in The Big Lebowski (if you needed that last tidbit of information, we’re probably not friends anyway, so you can just stop reading now), is probably one of the most worsh … Read More

Confessions of a child trekkie (via Genesis Meranda)

Confessions of a child trekkie Secrets are like poison to our souls. They are dark things that wiggle about constantly awaiting their moment; that special and inopportune moment to rear its ugly head and scream "I AM TRUTH!" Unfortunately, my secret unraveled like the loose thread of a crappy Christmas sweater from 1982. I didn't mean to give my dark secret its moment. Actually, I'm not positive I was even fully aware of my dark secret until there it was. I had outed myself, w … Read More

May the Fourth Be With You! (via Miss Vinyl Ahoy)

May the Fourth Be With You! Yes, I am super huge uber dork. It's Star Wars Day! And, simply because I can, I have put together a couple outfits inspired by some of the Star Wars charracters (don't worry, I won't add lightsabers. I don't think most normal people can walk around with them all day and not look crazy. I've tried.) I don't think my weird little outfits need any explaination. LOL. That is all. May the fourth be with you :) Happy Star Wars Day!! … Read More

Who’s the Boss? (via X Rated)

With the exception of rock star and possibly journalist, there’s no job in the world that I’d rather have than being a stand-up comedian. Yes, I love my job as a teacher—delivering lectures to college students on how an essay is like a cheeseburger rather than one-liners to a bunch of drunken hecklers at Helium Comedy Club – but, oh, how I dream of being on a stage, lone spotlight shining down on me, sweat glistening on my brow, as I prepare to o … Read More

Paulo Freire vs. Mister Softee: Two Major Flaws in Waiting for “Superman” (via Abominations)

As an educator, I was especially curious to see Waiting for "Superman" and, despite the criticism the documentary garnered from many of my colleagues, was pleased when the movie finally came off the "Very Long Wait" list on my Netflix queue and found its way to my doorstep. Before settling in to view the DVD last night, my wife (who is also a teacher) and I joked that it would make us hate ourselves and each other for the terrible things that we' … Read More

Everyday Camera (via The Hut of Zen)

Everyday Camera Does anybody remember the first days of camera phones? We probably thought to ourselves "They would never beat a proper camera, what a gimmick!" Well indeed, the camera then was more of a gimmick than a tool. Who would have thought then that with the rapid improvement in mobile phone technology over the last 10 years, phone cameras are slowly turning into a worthy substitute of a compact. I remember Sony Ericsson releasing their modern classic W8 … Read More

Getting There (via X Rated)

Some good thoughts on teaching, learning, and racquetball from Monica D’Antonio…

Recently, my husband has been teaching me to play racquetball. He’s a really good instructor, my husband. He’s patient, knowledgeable, and fair. He offers praise when I’m doing well and little nudges when I’m not. And, he’s competitive, which makes me work harder. For example, there are times when he’s going easy on me, and I’ll start to get cocky and lazy – then, BAM! He’ll hit what seems like a 90 MPH kill shot right at the base of the front wa … Read More

Friday Roundtable: Does the “nostalgia factor” hinder our judgement when looking back at classic videogames? (via Bits ‘n’ Bytes: Video Games News, Reviews, Previews, Editorials & More!)

Friday Roundtable: Does the "nostalgia factor" hinder our judgement when looking back at classic videogames? If there's one thing that we've realised this week at Bits 'n' Bytes with our incredibly popular (and fun) Retro Week, it's the fact that videogames aren't as young and as new as we sometimes think they are.  In reality, videogames are pretty old.  Over the course of this time, we've seen some pretty special games, which have not only entertained us, but have also revolutionised the world of videogames. One of the most enjoyable aspects of Retro … Read More
